Considerable developments are initiated by the government of Eritrea. Under the Eritrean Ports Rehabilitation project Massawa Port saw great changes of development. Berths were extended in order to accommodate deep draft vessels of 240m LOA. Most of the area was paved by modern interlocking concrete blocks. In recent years technologically advanced equipment were introduced and also the organizational setup of the port industry was restructured.

In the frame of development, Massawa Port Authority recently expanded the container storage area of the port around 149,756 m2 to accommodates 4000 extra Container so as to cover an increased demand of investor in port industry.

Bisha Mining Share Company (a joint venture company between Canadian mining company Nevsun and Eritrean company ENAMCO) is one of the mining companies that has already started to use the new container yard for the export of copper concentrate, and other companies (Zara Mining, a Chinese and Eritrean Joint venture; Colluli Potash Co. an Australian Eritrean Company; Asmara Mining Share Company ) are on the way.
